Individual flowers have 4 rounded petals, are ¾ to 1 inch across with 6 pale yellow stamens. It has a flavor similar to licorice. It does not grow well in continuously damp soil.

It has white, lavender or purple, flowers that are very fragrant, particularly in the evening. Phlox has five petals, dame’s rocket has just four. This plant is often mistaken for phlox.
